Liposuction is a popular and effective plastic surgery
procedure that basically helps to remove extra and stubborn fat from the body.
People choose the solution of liposuction to improve the shape or contours of
their body, especially if they can’t get rid of their fat deposits despite all
of their strict diet and exercise. The body parts that patients usually want to
get rid of excess fat are the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms, neck, or
back. Although liposuction isn’t a weight loss treatment, as it leads patients
to maintain a stable weight, it can provide them a lighter, healthier and more
active lifestyle.

How Does it Work?
Liposuction is a very popular procedure among both men and women. This procedure aims to remove stubborn fat tissue which people can’t get rid of with diets and exercises. It can be performed on the face, hips, abdomen, tights and buttocks either alone or in combination with a facelift or tummy tuck.

How Many Types of Liposuction are There?
There are 4 types of liposuction, and these are:
Tumescent liposuction: This is the most common type of liposuction. During the procedure, your surgeon will inject a sterile solution that helps remove fat, an anesthetic (lidocaine) to relieve pain, and a drug that causes your blood vessels to contract (epinephrine).
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): In this type of liposuction, the surgeon will use a cannula which uses sound waves to rupture the fat cells. Since the fat will be liquified, it will be easier to suck the fat out.
Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): During LAL, your surgeon will use a laser to rupture the fat cells to liquefy them. Once the cells are liquefied, the surgeon will remove them.
Water-jet assisted liposuction: This type requires the surgeon to use pressurized saline. The saline stream will be used to loosen the fat cells instead of rupturing them. This will make the fat removal process smoother and quicker.
What Does Liposuction Surgery Involve?
Once you have decided to undergo Liposuction, we will plan and customize the whole procedure so as to suit your personal preferences, needs, and the clinics’ practices. When you arrive at the clinic, you will have a face-to-face consultation with your Liposuction surgeon. Part of the discussions will be about your expectations and goals. Here is what you should expect during the Liposuction procedure:
1. Taking
the Anesthesia
Liposuction can be done while you
are under local anesthetic, but if the surgery is too complex and it requires
the surgeon to remove a large amount of fat from multiple locations, your
surgeon can opt for general anesthesia.
2. Making
the incisions
Once you are anesthetized, your
surgeon will start the procedure by making small incisions on the predetermined
areas. The incisions will be minimal and tiny, this also translates to minimal
scarring. If your surgery involves complementary surgeries such as tummy tuck,
then your surgeon can make large incisions.
3. Reduction
of the fat tissues
After your surgeon makes the
incisions, the next step is to remove unwanted fat. This is done using medical
tube known as the cannula. The surgeon will loosen the fat tissue by moving the
cannula back and forth. This makes it easy to suction the fat cells.
4. Assisted
techniques
Your surgeon may use ultrasound or
laser-assisted techniques to make the suction process easier as these
techniques liquefy the fat cells.
5. Closing
the incision sites
After removing the fat deposits,
your surgeon will suture the incisions. Your surgeon may decide to put
temporary drain tubes underneath the skin so as to drain excess fluid. This
also helps minimizes the risk of being infected.
6. Check-up
after the operation
When the operation is done, you will have to spend the first night at the hospital –under the supervision of a well-trained medical assistants. In the next day, your surgeon will make post-op check-ups, and it is during this period that you will be given instructions to follow during the recovery period.
