Laser liposuction or laser lipolysis is a technique commonly used for destroying accumulated fat in the body. The laser radiation by its thermal effect allows the destruction of fat cells and the obtaining of a skin retraction. Comparing with the traditional liposuction procedure, laser liposuction is a less invasive and less bloody procedure in which a small tube is inserted through a tiny incision to deliver laser energy and heat into the excessive fat that is under the skin. The increase in temperature in the dermis induces excitation of the fibroblast which will produce collagen. This skin stretching effect constitutes a definite advantage of laser liposuction, in particular in certain delicate areas where liposuction gives often disappointing results: the inner face of the thighs, arms, neck, stomach area or back. When the quantity of fat to be treated is large, it may be more effective to combine laser liposuction and conventional liposuction to improve the results. The choice between these different techniques will be the result of clinical examination and discussion between the plastic surgeon and the patient.
Laser liposuction is recommended for healthy adults who want to look thinner and sculpt their bodies with the help of non-surgical treatment. People who are obese are not suitable for this treatment as laser lipo helps to contour and shape the body rather than provide significant weight loss.
